Aggies Take the Title 4 Years in a Row
November 26, 2008
Texas A&M University fans have once again taken the title of most lives saved during the annual "Colors of Commitment" blood drive challenge.
The drive, which ran Nov. 15 through 23, brought in a total of 678 A&M supporters and 333 UT supporters. While the victory goes to the Aggies, Longhorns have a reason to celebrate, too, as their numbers nearly doubled from last year (2007: 649 A&M, 171 UT).
One week before the rivaling schools, Texas A&M and The University of Texas, face off on Thanksgiving Day, fans of both teams were encouraged to help save lives while supporting their favorite team.
All those who donated or attempted to donate received a commemorative T-shirt. Plus, one lucky donor, Sharon Amery of Katy, won a pair of tickets to the Nov. 27 game at Darrell K. Royal -Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin.
Through The Blood Center's new affiliate, The Blood Center of Brazos Valley, donors in the Bryan/College Station area took part in Colors of Commitment during a media blood drive with TV station KBTX and radio stations Candy 95 and WTAW. Out of 104 successful donations, an impressive 64 came from new donors. One Lucky Donor Wins UT vs. A&M Game Day Tickets
November 25, 2008
Commit for Life donor Sharon Amery of Katy is the lucky winner of a pair UT - A&M Thanksgiving Day game tickets.
Amery is one of hundreds of donors who made a life-saving donation during the annual "Colors of Commitment" blood drive challenge between University of Texas and Texas A&M supporters.
From Nov. 15 through 23 donors were encouraged to support their favorite team and help save lives. All those who donated or attempted to donate received a commemorative T-shirt and an opportunity to win tickets to the highly anticipated game.
While Amery credited the Aggie team, she comes from a house divided as her daughter currently attends Texas A&M and her husband is a former Texas Longhorn.
"I'm taking my husband to this game, so chances are we'll be rooting for the Longhorns on Thursday," Amery says.
The friendly rivalry resulted in a win for the Aggies with a total of 678 A&M supporters versus the 333 UT supporters.

Each year, the Association of Former Students honors outstanding students with the Buck Weirus Spirit Award at the Parents’ Weekend All-University Awards Ceremony. This award honors 52 students who are enthusiastically involved and who demonstrate high involvement, create positive experiences through the Aggie community, impact student life at Texas A & M and enhance the Aggie spirit. Unlike other awards, the Buck Weirus Spirit Award recognizes those students who make contributions to the university by participation in student organizations, Aggie traditions and university events.
The award is named for the late Richard "Buck" Weirus '42, who served as executive director of The Association of Former Students from 1964 to 1980 and personally awarded each award until his death in 1997. During his tenure as director, The Association of Former Students grew to become the premier alumni organization in the world.

This summer my daughter Tracy Ashton and approximately 30 other group leaders from MSC Aggie Leaders of Tomorrow (A LOT) traveled to Austin on a road trip. While eating at the Oasis in Austin they were seated next to a group of "t.u." students celebrating a birthday. After singing Happy Birthday they began singing the "t.u." fight song. Right behind them were a group from OU who began their Boomer Sooner song and not to be out done the A LOT group sang The Aggie War Hymn. Another table of former students joined in with them and as my daughter said it was very loud and really fun. As the Aggies prepaired to pay for their bill, the waiter came by with a big smile and told them not to worry about the bill as a gentleman who asked not to be identified had already taken care of it! He said to tell their group to enjoy the weekend. It was great to see Aggies in Austin!!!!!

My daughter Marty is a remarkable young lady making a difference in our world meeting evangelism, poverty and lack of education at the grassroots level. She has been a church volunteer since Junior High but now she has accepted a commitment during her final year at A&M to work as an intern for Grace Bible Church in College Station, Texas. There she has worked for the last 3 years, volunteering in the ministry through the church called Youth impact, which focuses on reaching at risk students in the Bryan/College Station area.

My daughter Alice was introduced on Kyle Field at the Tech game, because she is the Head Co-ordinator of the Aggie Hostesses. The Hostesses are a group of girls whose main function is to support Aggie football. They volunteer their time working with the coaches in their offices, working at football camps held during the summer, working at the golf tournaments that the Athletic Department puts on, working at Coach's Night in different cities, acting as hostesses for Coach Fran's Chalk Talk for Women every year, and supporting the football team during the spirit walk and at the games. They design and distribute the football posters around College Station during the summer. Originally, the Hostesses recruited football players for Texas A&M by escorting them and their parents at the games. In compliance with the NCAA rules, the girls no longer come into contact with the recruits, but they are still very busy. She also just got her senior ring!
